Pulled Elbow

Pulled elbow

Pulled Elbow presents with severe pain in the arm. In most cases, there is a history of traction force applied to arm. Pulling distally from hand or falling of child while hand is hold by accompany parent or baby-sitter create the traction force. Patient start to cry immediately and is not able to raise her or his arm intentionally.

How does it happen?

When a pulling force is applied to the elbow joint, the radial head get dislocated from surrounding the annular ligament. Patient  holds her/his forearm in pronation and refuses to raise her/his arm.

What is the treatment?

Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon reduces the pulled elbow with a rotation and flexion manoeuvre. An audible snapping and relieve of pain confirm the reduction.
