What is arthroscopic surgery?
Along with the development in Medical Technology, arthroscopic surgery like other mini-invazive treatmet modalities hasbecome popular and widely used. Arthroscopic surgical examination is performed with two tubuler shaped instruments via two portals (5-10 mm diameter) made on the joints. One of tubuler instrument is arthroscopic scope. An arthroscopic scope helps us to see inside of the joint. A minicamera is attached to the tip of arthroscpic scope transfer the video image on a monitor. Special arthroscopic instruments are used in the surgery through the other portal. Since the joint surgery is performed via two small portals, the surgical trauma is minimal and healing is faster. Arthroscopic surger can be performed either under general anesthesia or with spinal/epidural anesthesia.
Which areas is arthroscopic surgery used?
Arthroscopic surgery is commonly used in the following joints:
Knee Arthroscopy: Successfull results are obtained in the knee arthroscopic surgery of meniscal tears, meniscal cysts, anterior cruciate ligament ruptures, posterior cruciate ligament ruptures, cartilage injuries, osteochondral lesions and gonarthrosis.
Shoulder Arthroscopy: Shoulder rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement disease and recurrent shoulder dislocatios, and other shoulder instabilities are best treated with arthroscopic surgery.
Ankle Arthroscopy: Ankle arthroscopy is used in the surgical treatment of following disease: Ankle cartilage and ligament injuries, ankle osteokondral diseases, ankle impingement disease, intra-articular loose bodies.
Hip Arthroscopy: Femoracetabular impingement disease, acetabular labral tears, hip joint cartilage lesions, intra-articular loose bodies, sinovial hipertrophy can be diagnosed and treated with arthroscopic surgery.
Elbow Arthroscopy: Particularly, when elbow joint cartilage problems, intra-articularloose bodies, elbow joint synovial hypertrophy secondary to the diseases like romatoid arthritis are suspected conditions, the best treatment is performed by arthroscopic surgery.
Wrist Arthroscopy: Synovitis in wrist joint, triangular fibrocartilage tears, wrist impingement conditions and ganglions can be easily diagnosed and treated via wrist arthroscopy by an experienced orthopedic surgeon.
